Calligrapher Natsuki Kubo

Born in 1984 in Kyowa, Hokkaido, Natsuki Kubo began studying calligraphy at the age of seven under renowned commissioned calligrapher Zuho Sato. She has received numerous accolades, including the Encouragement Award at the All-Hokkaido Calligraphy Exhibition and the International Contemporary Calligraphy Exhibition.

In 2012, she launched her professional career in Sapporo. Following her first artist residency in Chicago in 2014, she traveled to the U.S. five times by 2018. During her time there, she exhibited at venues including the Consulate-General of Japan in Chicago, the CBRE Building lobby, and local galleries. She also took part in a three-day collaborative performance at the experimental arts venue Links Hall, working with local musicians and dancers.

In 2019, she presented a live calligraphy performance at the official reception for the G20 Tourism Ministerial Meeting held in Kutchan, Hokkaido. In 2024, one of her works was added to the collection of the Kinjiro Kida Museum of Art.

Her practice explores calligraphy beyond traditional boundaries, incorporating elements such as sound, light, and even chocolate. Her signature series, Kaitai-Sousho (“Deconstructed and Reconstructed Calligraphy”), involves breaking down and reimagining characters to create new visual expressions. In addition to holding solo exhibitions at department stores, museums, and galleries, she also engages in commercial design for hotels, restaurants, inns, and corporate branding.

Currently based in Tsukigata, Hokkaido, where she relocated after marrying into a rice-farming family, Kubo established the Tsukigata Art Village in 2022. This multidisciplinary art facility, housed in a repurposed former school, serves as her atelier and creative base. Inspired by the rich natural environment and pristine water of this renowned rice-producing region, she creates art and products from local by-products such as rice bran—exploring the potential of what might otherwise be discarded through the lens of “mottainai,” or mindful resourcefulness. Through these efforts, she continues to connect local materials and culture with contemporary art.
